The bear in these pictures is the same one as the bear that came on Sept. 5, 2002. Its wound is looking a lot better than it did on its previous visit. The bear came in this time around 8:15 PM and dumped the trash can over and took what little was in it, out. It didn't make too big of a mess and stayed around only briefly. Since it came so early, my little boy and my little girl were not in bed yet, so they got to see it. They couldn't believe their eyes, they were very excited to be looking at a real live wild bear.

The 4 pictures below indicate my most recent experience with a bear. I took these pictures at 11:50 PM on September 7, 2002. This bear is a large bear, I estimate its weight to be around 300 to 350 Lbs. Based on my estimations, it is 31" to 36" tall to the tops of its shoulders and approximately 53" to 57" long from tail to tip of nose. Our trash can has been dumped over and a bag or two of trash carried off to the edge of the woods and opened up now for some time. This bear is the larger of at least two that have been doing this for about a month. As you can see, the can laying on the ground has mud on it where they have been grabbing it and pulling it over.

This is a picture of the first bear that we have seen since last year. It seems that they start to come around more often in the Fall, maybe looking for more food to store up for the winter? My wife and I decided since we had a new camera, that does fairly well with dark settings that we would set an alarm for the bear so we could take some pictures. This bear tripped the alarm at 4:15 AM on the morning of September 5, 2002 and we took off downstairs with the camera to get some pictures. As you can see, this one has quite a nasty wound on its rear quarter. We first thought it was a gun shot wound, but we am now wondering if maybe it has been in a fight with another bear. I estimate this bear to weigh between 200 and 250 Lbs and to stand about 26" to 30" tall to the top of its shoulder. We were not able to get any good pictures of this one because I had to stop and do a battery change mid-stream of the pictures and by the time I got done, the bear was pretty much ready to go about his business.

The pictures below were taken from my Camcorder looking out the front door. They were taken in the early morning before I went to work. Here, it was on the front porch where it evidently spent the night. We saw it as we came down the stairs, so we grabbed the Camcorder and started recording. This is a young male bear, probably around 18 months old. I figure it to weigh near 200 lbs. It stands about 26" tall based on looking at it compared to my porch railings.
This night (pictures below) the bear decided to bring a buddy with it. I suppose it was its twin brother, they were both about the same size and looked identical. If you look real hard at the bottom of the steps, and at the end of the bears nose in the first picture, you can see the second bear. Its a night shot so its very difficult to see at a distance. I have enhanced it slightly trying to lighten it up so its viewable, thats what the fuzzy look is all about. Also there is a slight reflection from the glass in our front door.
After this, the bear did come up on the porch and mess around a few minutes. Then both bears went out on the grass, and decided to play a little. They stood on there rear feet, pushed on each other then wondered off into the darkness. We saw them a few times after this, but only once together. We did find out that there are three of them around. The 2 smaller males, and one rather large male. We have video of the large one in the front yard, but it was too dark to get a video capture from. It looks okay on the recording, but just doesnt come out in the capture. In October of 1997, three bear were trapped by the Fish and game commision, 2 of them weighed 200 Lbs and the other weighed in at a little over 400 Lbs. I believe these bear are the ones that were trapped and removed from the area.
